For all my friends in India (and my German friends staying in India): I wish you a very HAPPY DIWALI!
On this exact day, 20 years ago, two seperated ones became finally one again after so many years. I’m talking about Germany, of course. The former Federal Republic of Germany (BRD) and the German Democratic Republic (DDR), the “West” and the “East”, became one with the Iron Curtain being teared down (I won’t go into the exact chronology of events here).
Every country has its National Day, and for me as a German, my National Day is October 3rd, the German Unity Day (“Tag der Wiedervereinigung”). Even though Germans in general are not very patriotic compared to other nations, there were and are of course some events on and around this day to celebrate the reunification. Personally I’m not doing any special celebrations (after all I have to work today).
I was only 5 years old in 1990 and I was born in the West, but I have childhood memories of me and my family visiting our relatives in the East and having to face waiting in long lines at the border and not being able to visit every place in the East because of restricted areas, but also the fascination of things being different over there. My parents and grandparents, though, have lived a big part of their lives in a divided country.
So let’s hope and pray for peace and unity in Germany, Europe and the whole World! Never should a nation or society be divided like this again!
